Bilingual Master Program „Energietechnik"

„Course Language: English (50-75%) and German (25-50%)“

Our new Master Program in Energietechnik at the KIT School of Energy is based on the premise that the complex challenges we face in the areas of energy require coordinated and interdisciplinary solutions. In the near future, we will need people versed in the wide, interconnected fields of energy and having a profound understanding of the interlinked realms of science, technology, and social sciences. Our Master Program in Energietechnik is a unique chance to understand the conversion and use of energy in our society. The program successfully combines effective teaching and in-depth research methods. Research is carried out in close cooperation with the KIT Energy Center as well as with enterprises and other universities and research institutions. Our close contact to industrial enterprises is one of the key success factors in ensuring practical application of new knowledge and theories in the real world. Our aim is to educate world-class professionals with firm theoretical understanding and profound expertise in the focus areas of Renewable Energy and Energy Storage, Thermal Power Plants, Chemical Energy Carriers, Decentralized Power Supply and Grid Integration, Energy Economics and Informatics, Nuclear and Fusion Technologies, Utility Facilities, and Energy in Buildings. In these areas, we have excelled and acquired vast competence. We are being considered one Europe’s top technical universities. We meet our students’ educational needs and provide excellent research facilities. Our teaching is based on the latest research findings and international developments in the focus areas. We invite skilled students to join our highly motivated team!
What We Offer:

Interdisciplinary Learning

Finding answers to the current problems associated with the future energy system no longer is a disciplinary task. Cross- and interdisciplinary solutions based on both fundamental and applied knowledge are increasingly required. Our Master Program covers a wide range of topics, from science and technology to economics and politics to hands-on projects to project-based components. Environmental and sustainability concerns and impacts of energy supply and use are discussed as well.

Beyond the Classroom

Opportunities for extending energy education beyond the laboratory and classroom are manifold. A variety of research opportunities exists for our students: The interdisciplinary project can be tailored to the student’s interests and gives you the chance to work in a project team with people from other disciplines. During an internship of at least 6 weeks, you will gain experience in a special field of energy research or energy economy. The internship will help you find out whether you are interested in a particular career and network with colleagues, experts, and other scientists.

Latest Developments

New energy subjects are being developed every semester in response to upcoming questions and problems. New topics are outlined in close cooperation with the KIT Energy Center.

Career Opportunities

KIT is a leading institution of studies and education in science and technology worldwide. As KIT is the result of a merger of a research university with a large-scale research institution, students are given broad access to specific projects in fundamental and applied research. Key competencies are additionally conveyed by courses offered at the House of Competence (HoC) of KIT. Both industry and research expect young scientists to be qualified and skilled in more than just their special fields of studies. Multiple skills call for multiple concepts. Interdisciplinary advanced training is a cornerstone of your career and improves your prospects after you will have conferred your master´s degree.

Detailed Information

Structure of the Energietechnik Master Program

Course Structure – Core Courses

Basic Courses (17 Credit Points)

- more information -

Basic courses are intended to provide for a solid foundation for a later specialization. Irrespective of the knowledge acquired during the previous BSc. studies, all graduates of the Master program will participate in the basic courses and thus acquire fundamental knowledge in mechanical design, thermodynamics, electric power generation, electrical machines, thermal engines, power electronics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, which constitute the fundamentals of energy engineering. Furthermore, the basic courses will enable the students to speak a common language, which is an important prerequisite in the highly interdisciplinary field of energy technologies.

Main Subjects (32 Credit Points)

- more information-

A specialization is possible by choosing Main Subjects. They cover fields like Thermal Power Plants, Decentralized Power Supply and Grid Integration, Renewable Energy and Energy Storage, or Energy Economics and Informatics. From the total set of main subjects, students are asked to select two subjects to deepen their knowledge.

Compulsory Optional Courses (16 Credit Points)

While the basic courses are aimed at harmonizing the students’ knowledge of fundamentals of energy engineering, compulsory optional courses to be attended depend on the area of specialization chosen during the Master Program.

Mandatory Courses (5 Credit Points)

Mandatory courses have to be chosen by the students according to their special interests. All courses offered by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Process Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology can be chosen.

Course Structure - Additional Courses

Interdisciplinary Project (6 Credit Points)

The interdisciplinary project gives the students the chance to work in a project group. The issues dealt with by a project work primarily are of relevance to industry or practice or they are part of a larger research project carried out together with a partner from research or industry.

Internship (8 Credit Points)

During the master program, all students are asked to get into contact with the job market and to transfer their theoretical knowledge to practice in order to prepare for a future career. All students of the Energietechnik Master Program are therefore obliged to successfully complete an internship of at least 6 weeks.

Master Thesis (30 Credit Points)

The master thesis (30 ECTS) covers the entire fourth semester. Within this period, our students work on a topic which is part of a research project or may be directly related to industry.
